History of the School
The school was born from the vision and dedication of parents who recognised a growing need for early childhood education within the community. Guided by a shared vision, parents of young children came together to explore the idea of establishing a playgroup. Through the generous support of the United Church, a hall was made available, providing a welcoming space for this new beginning. What started with just 15 children soon laid the foundation for the thriving school we celebrate today.
As the group grew, discussions highlighted the need for a pre-primary school. During this time, the Freemasons made facilities available at the Masonic Hall in Hermanus, enabling the school to continue its development.
On 1 July 1979, Lorna Such was officially appointed by the Department of Education as the first principal. The school officially opened with 17 learners and one support staff member, who was employed and paid by the School Governing Body.
In 1981, the Overstrand Municipality made the current school grounds in Lord Robert Avenue available for the construction of a permanent school building, at a nominal rental of R1 per year. With the gracious support of the local Rotarians, the foundations of the school were dug on 3 December 1981. At the beginning of the second term in 1982 a dream came true. The first pre-primary school officially opened with 2 classes with 45 learners.
From its founding years, the school’s growth gained momentum at an extraordinary pace. As its reputation flourished, the need for expansion soon followed, with an additional class opening in 1987 and two more joining the school family in 1995. A significant milestone was reached in 1998 with the appointment of the school’s first English teacher, marking the start of a new chapter. Today, this journey of growth stands as a testament to the school’s success, proudly offering five English and eight Afrikaans classes within a thriving and dynamic learning community.
From these humble beginnings, the school was built on a clear and enduring vision: Foundation through Learning, Friendship and Fun. This vision continues to guide the school’s approach to early childhood education, ensuring a nurturing, supportive, and joyful environment for every learner.
Today, the school stands as a testament to what can be achieved through community collaboration, dedication, and a shared belief in the value of early childhood education. While the school has grown and developed over the years, it remains firmly rooted in the principles on which it was founded. With a continued commitment to learning, friendship, and fun, the school proudly prepares young learners with a strong foundation for their future educational journey and lifelong learning.
